High Speed Photography
A photographic, motion control technique that captures a rapidly occurring event. Often the success of an image is determined by accurate timing and a LOT of LIGHT.
Classwork: Research High Speed Technique
Due by Thursday 2/8 & Friday 2/9
Find 5 images that represents HIGH Speed Photography
1 - paint drop, 1 - water splash, 3 - balloon popping, 2 - what interests you most
-Create a folder and label Lastname_firstname
-Label each image lastname_paintdrop.jpg, lastname_watersplash.jpg, etc

There are a variety of methods and equipment to use when shooting high speed. You can accomplish a successful image with the use of fast and slow shutter speeds, motion and sound triggers, and coordinated timing.
Our equipment is limited in terms of wireless triggers, so we will be using partners/groups to attempt accurate timing for our shoot, however, each student must submit an individual image. In class you will be watching a series of demonstrations that illustrate high speed photography. Those examples include:
1. Paint Dropping
2. Water Splashing
3. Balloon Popping
For each station, safety and equipment maintenance are our priorities!

- Be sure you clean up ANY and ALL spills immediately!
- Keep cameras and lights a SAFE distance from splashing paint and water!
- Safety Glasses!
1. Paint Dropping
things to remember: -zoom/telephoto lens -LOTS of light -FAST shutter speed (Manual Mode) -watered down paint |
2. Water Splashing
things to remember: -zoom/telephoto lens -LOTS of light -FAST shutter speed (Manual Mode) -"dry" glass after each attempt (no water spots) |
3. Balloon Popping
things to remember: -zoom/telephoto lens -LOTS of light -FAST shutter speed (Manual Mode) -synchronized popping and shooting |
Project: High Speed Photograph
Using your knowledge of high speed photography and reflecting on the examples from class, submit a photograph that accurately demonstrates the technique. You may use one of the 3 classroom setups, but are not required to do so. Research high speed images online and come up with an interesting idea! What rapidly occurring event will you freeze?!
Requirements:
-Complete/Attempt each high speed station in class
-Choose your BEST 2 examples of the technique to submit (2 images two different stations).
-MINIMAL EDITING! (you may crop/brighten/darken) thats it!
-Add your watermark
-Folder: LastName_HighSpeed
-Label: LastName_Speed.jpg
Rubric:
10: Submission | Turned in on time in proper format, used class time wisely
20: Composition | Composition is aesthetically pleasing, paid attention to compositional elements
20: Exposure | Demonstrated knowledge of the exposure triangle
25: Technique | Followed the high speed photography instructions and was able to create work that froze the objects completely.
15: Craftsmanship | Picture is crisp, color corrected and care was taken to achieve the best image possible
10: Watermark | Watermark placed on all images
TOTAL 100
