Similar to camera obscura, was the principle of camera lucida. Invented in the early 1800s, the device did away with the box. A prism was mounted on a stand and placed above a sheet of paper. When the person looked downward through the prism, they would see the scene in front of the camera lucida projected onto the paper. Tracing was a quick and easy matter.
Both of these methods help led to the development of the camera. While both camera obscura and camera lucida displayed the scene as a pattern of light and shadow, they could not be used to record the scene in a permanent form like that a modern camera does today. |
Plate-based Photography: In 1851, Frederick Archer developed the wet-plate collodion process. Glass was used as the base and the collodion (a sticky liquid that dried clear) was used to coat the plate. When the collodion was tacky, the plate was plunged into a silver nitrate solution, making it light sensitive. This process form a light-sensitive emulsion. The major drawback with this process was that the plates had to be prepared, exposed, and processed while still wet. The photography had to take his darkroom with him (Figure 6). This was the primary photographic process form 1850 to 1880.
